The 61 tattoos on Ötz are divided into 19 groups, mainly composed of lines or crosses. They are made by making a fresh incision on the skin and then rubbing charcoal into the skin, so they are considered to be treatments instead of decorations.
It is now difficult to determine when tattoos appear in human culture, because there are few written records, and scientists must look at archaeological records. But even so, it is hard to rely on, because it is often difficult to know exactly what the tattoo might do, and whether ancient instruments were used for tattoos or for other purposes.
Hundreds of ancient tattoo specimens have been found, although Ötzi is now known to be the oldest, there are many ancient examples throughout the world, including modern Russia, Egypt, and China.
The tattoo effects of Ötzi probably won't be like other ancient tattoos, because we found more tattoos about our ancestors. Their tattoos showed that tattoo techniques were already developing and ubiquitous, which means there were older tattoos.
